Wall Mount Pet Doors

One thing to consider when seeking a convenient way to let your dog or cat in and out are wall mount pet doors. If you are thinking of installing a pet door into an existing door, you should know that once you do, the door cannot be put back the way it was. It will always have a hole in it where the pet door was installed. Wall mount doors, on the other hand, can usually be taken out and the area can be patched so that no evidence of a pet door even exists.


Installation of a pet door into your wall can be tricky if you don't have experience with wall construction. One thing you should know is that the wall has to be framed out. This means that after the hole is cut, the wall has to be sealed to prevent moisture from penetrating the inside. There are self-framing door kits that make this effortless. If you know how to frame a wall, you can choose any pet door that meets your needs.

For example, there are pet doors like the PetSafe Smart Door that can be installed into a wall, but are not self-framing. The majority of pet doors, whether self framing or not, come with a cover that locks. Be wary of any overhanging areas that may interfere with the locking of the pet door cover. Different brands have different designs, for example Hale which is a big pet door company gives you the option of a side loading locking cover. Another is the Freedom Pet Pass which has a cover installed from the front of the door. No matter what kind of wall door you choose for your pet make sure it is the right size for them.

You don't want a door that is too tight for your pet to squeeze through, so measure their height and width before choosing a door. Also, wall mount pet doors can be found with one or two flaps depending on your needs. There are even pet doors that slide open and closed using an electronic or infrared technology. These doors activate using a sensor clipped on your pet's collar. They provide a greater range of settings and options than manual doors.
